“The Demon Girl Next Door” is serialized in “Manga Time Kirara Carat”.

The story is about Yuko Yoshida, a descendant of the Dark Clan who suddenly awakens to the power of the magical creatures, and works as a demoness to defeat magical girls in order to break the curse that has been placed on her family.

The TV anime began airing in July 2019 and attracted a lot of attention among the bumper crop of summer 2019 anime. In addition, the Internet meme “Shamiko is bad,”(japanese: シャミ子が悪いんだよ) which was born from this work, became a big topic of conversation on the Internet as a phrase that people might actually say, even though it is not used in either the manga or the anime.

In this article, we would like to share with you the appeal of the TV anime “The Demon Girl Next Door”.

I was hooked on anime when I was a student and for a while I watched every anime that was on the air. However, when I became a working adult, I stopped watching anime due to the fact that I was in a “black company”(japanese: ブラック企業 meaning: sweatshop). It was very hard for me to stop watching anime. I made a list of things I wanted to watch, deciding that one day I would watch anime again, and added the ones that caught my attention.

“The Demon Girl Next Door” is one on that list.

“demonic or magic being”and Magical Girls

What does the word “demon tribe”(japanese kanji: 魔族) conjure up in your mind? It’s not a good image to imagine. Now then,
What do you think of when you write the word “mazoku”?(japanese hiragana: まぞく) Just by writing it in hiragana, the bad image disappears and it looks soft and gentle, doesn’t it?

Yuko Yoshida, the protagonist of this work, is a kind and gentle woman who does not try to use her acquired abilities for shameful purposes, but helps Momo when she is weak. After becoming a mazoku, she was given a name for her activities as a mazoku and was called Shamiko by Momo, friends, and teachers. The story reveals about the curse and the family.

Chiyoda Momo, who saved Shamiko early in the story, is also a kind and yet strong magical girl. At first glance, she appears to be an honor student, but as the story progresses, her many facets become apparent and interesting. In the middle of the story, we get a glimpse of her past, which leads us to Shamiko’s past.

“town”

The setting of this work is the fictional town of Tama City. In addition to Sakuragaoka High School, which Shamiko and her family attend, there is also the Tama Sakura shopping district and a shopping center, and other than Banda-so, where the Yoshida family lives, the area is quite lively. Residents are accustomed to peculiar situations. The characters in the work give off the atmosphere of a soft and gentle town. The occasional mob character and narration also convey the atmosphere of the town and school in an interesting way.

Fantasy comedy that is not otherworldly

This work is a story that takes place not in another world, but in Tama City. As an anime, it has playful backgrounds and foreshadowing of the next development, making it a work that you will want to watch repeatedly. It is also possible to feel the kindness and heart of the characters, which is one of the main driving forces that propels the story forward. The fantasy and comedy depicted in Tama City, which is similar to the modern world but not a different world, resonates more with us in the modern world and makes us wish there was a world like this, a “town” like this, for sure.
