The story of Yūta Hibiki, a high school student with amnesia, who meets Gridman and fulfils the mission given to him, and with the help of his classmates, regains his daily life destroyed by the monsters.

The TV animation started airing in October 2018 and was the talk of the town as the robot/mecha slot for the autumn 2018 anime. It was also ranked second in the ‘Anime General Election Autumn 2018’ conducted by Niconico for anime broadcast in autumn 2018 (October-December). It also came second in the Anime General Election 2018 Annual Awards, which is for animated works broadcast or distributed during 2018, with 8.98% of the votes (from Wikipedia).

In this article, we would like to tell you about the TV anime SSSS.GRIDMAN.

I first became aware of “SSSS.GRIDMAN” after it was first broadcast. A friend told me about it and I wanted to watch it immediately, but at the time I was working for a ‘black company'(meaning: sweatshop) and couldn’t watch it in real time. However, it was on my list to watch at some point.

Based on SFX ‘Gridman the Hyper Agent’, which was broadcast between 1993 and 1994. I initially didn’t know that “SSSS.GRIDMAN” had an original story. Indeed, the monsters in the film have a SFX-like visual quality, and although I was a little concerned about Gridman’s transformation scene, I thought it was purely a robot animation.

I had only seen a few SFX when I was small and had a prejudice against them, as if they were something old. However, I hardly felt that “SSSS.GRIDMAN” was old. If you don’t know the original, watch it first as one of the late-night animations.

Cute heroines

The anime is based on SFX and is like a robot story. However, the daily lives of the characters are detailed and incorporate current trends. The daily life of the cute heroine and her friends adds a nice touch to the story, making it a work that is not all about robots.

Overview

Yūta Hibiki, a first-year high school student living in Tsutsujidai, wakes up one day and
one day, he woke up and found he had amnesia.
